30 By 30
I had a goal in January to lose 10% of my body weight by my birthday (June 7). My mom had gastric bypass surgery in her mid 50's and she had to go through 6 months of nutrition and counseling classes before they would agree to actually perform the surgery on her. She also had to lose 10% of her body weight in that amount of time. Doctors felt that if a patient could commit to losing that amount of weight before surgery then it helped show they were committed to a real lifestyle change, and decreasing your body weight by 10% significantly helped improve your overall health. So I figured it was a pretty realistic goal given that I had a good 23 weeks to accomplish it, and that gave me a goal of roughly 1-2 pounds a week. I've never set a realistic weight loss goal before in my efforts to lose weight, so I felt pretty good about myself.
Well, I didn't actually start until late March, narrowing my time span to 11 weeks, changing my weekly goal to 2-3 pounds per week. Not too bad...still realistic, right? I've read feedback from multiple success stories from people that conquered their weight issues the old fashioned, slow way week by week with diet and exercise that realistic goals are key to success. It takes years of developing unhealthy bad habits to put the weight on, so why assume that giving your body a 2 month deadline to lose X amount of pounds is going to work? Why pressure yourself like that and set yourself up for failure? It's not fair to demand so much of your body and still expect to keep it off long term.
Like I said....this time around is different. I'm not looking for a quick fix or a simple solution to understanding how my body works and what lifestyle works best for me. All I know is that my health is important, and the older I get the more my body is going to rebel against the extra weight. It's three and a half weeks until the big day, and I still want to strive to keep that initial goal I started out the year with...so, we're talking 4 pounds a week from here on out! I know, I know, I just gave a big ol' spiel about realistic goals and pressure and what not, but I really want to meet this goal come June 7th. I'm probably in the worst shape of my life, but at least I can say I took the first step and tackled the big 10% before 30, and jump start the summer.
I'm gonna give it my all and see what happens. Besides if anything, it keeps me distracted with all the other daunting thoughts that revolve around turning 30! YESH!
